What is GERD?Updated 2 years ago

GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or chronic acid reflux is a condition in which acid-containing contents in your stomach persistently leak back up into your esophagus. Experiencing acid reflux and heartburn more than twice a week may indicate GERD. The main symptoms are persistent heartburn and acid regurgitation.

Some people have GERD but do not experience heartburn symptoms. Instead, they experience pain in the chest, hoarseness in the morning or trouble swallowing. You may feel like you have food stuck in your throat or like you are choking or your throat is tight. GERD can also cause a dry cough and bad breath.

You can help control the symptoms of GERD by adjusting your eating and sleeping habits and by taking medications when needed. If you experience acid reflux or heartburn more than twice a week over a period of several weeks, we recommend you call your healthcare provider.
